Upon entering the state of nature, man finds himself amidst constant peril and mistrust. In such a state, every individual is an enemy to every other. Life, as Hobbes describes, becomes solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Without a strong sovereign, chaos and discord rule every encounter. Individuals are compelled to sacrifice some of their freedoms for the promise of security. Thus, absolute authority in the form of a monarch becomes essential for the preservation of life and order.
