Determining Reaction Order From Initial Rates
The effect of doubling the concentration of reactant X on the initial rate of a reaction was studied in four separate experiments. The rate increased by a factor of 2 in Experiment 1, a factor of 4 in Experiment 2, a factor of 8 in Experiment 3, and a factor of 1 (no change) in Experiment 4. Arrange the experiments in order of increasing reaction order with respect to X.
A
Experiment 3, Experiment 2, Experiment 1, Experiment 4
B
Experiment 1, Experiment 4, Experiment 2, Experiment 3
C
Experiment 4, Experiment 2, Experiment 1, Experiment 3
D
Experiment 4, Experiment 1, Experiment 2, Experiment 3
